The King's Crown quilt block pattern is a visually striking design that adds elegance to any quilt project. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the step-by-step process of creating The King's Crown quilt block. Let's get started!

Materials Needed:

  1. Fabric of your choice (preferably two contrasting colors)
  2. Cutting mat
  3. Rotary cutter
  4. Quilting ruler
  5. Sewing machine
  6. Thread
  7. Iron
  8. Pins
  9. Scissors

Step 1: Fabric Selection Choose two contrasting fabrics to highlight the intricate design of The King's Crown pattern. Consider using one fabric for the crown and another for the background. This contrast will make the crown stand out.

Step 2: Cutting the Fabric Using the cutting mat, rotary cutter, and quilting ruler, cut the following fabric pieces:

  • Crown fabric:
    • (4) 4.5" squares
    • (8) 3" squares
  • Background fabric:
    • (8) 3" squares
    • (4) 4.5" squares

Step 3: Creating Half-Square Triangles (HSTs) To create half-square triangles, follow these steps:

  • Take each pair of 4.5" crown fabric squares and background fabric squares. Place them right sides together.
  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the backside of the lighter fabric.
  • Sew a 1/4" seam on both sides of the drawn line.
  • Cut along the marked line to create two half-square triangles.
  • Press the seams open or towards the darker fabric.

Step 4: Assembling the Crown Units Arrange the HSTs and 3" background fabric squares to form crown units:

  • Take four HSTs and four background fabric squares.
  • Arrange them to form a square block as follows:
    • Place two HSTs on opposite corners, with their darker sides facing outward.
    • Place a background fabric square in the remaining two corners.
  • Sew the pieces together using a 1/4" seam allowance.
  • Repeat this process to create four crown units.

Step 5: Assembling The King's Crown Quilt Block Now it's time to assemble the King's Crown quilt block:

  • Take the four crown units created in the previous step.
  • Arrange them to form The King's Crown pattern, ensuring that the HSTs create the crown shape.
  • Sew the crown units together, matching the seams carefully.
  • Press the seams open or towards the darker fabric.

Step 6: Finishing Touches To complete The King's Crown quilt block:

  • Trim any excess fabric and square up the block to your desired size.
  • Press the block with an iron to make it flat and smooth.

Congratulations! You have successfully created The King's Crown quilt block pattern. Repeat these steps to make more blocks if needed for your quilt project.

Tips:

  1. Accurate cutting and precise seam allowances are crucial for achieving crisp points in The King's Crown pattern.
  2. Pressing the seams open or towards the darker fabric helps reduce bulk and ensures a neat finish.
  3. Take your time while sewing and align the seams carefully for a polished look.
  4. Experiment with different fabric combinations to create unique variations of The King's Crown pattern.

Now you're ready to incorporate The King's Crown quilt block pattern into your quilting projects. Enjoy the process and have fun creating beautiful quilted masterpieces!

How to Resize Quilt Blocks:
The first step in modifying any quilt block is to decide on the size of your finished quilt block. You can come to a decision based on a number of factors: doubling a pattern, cutting your pattern in half, or choosing the size based on your available fabric.
NOTE: When working from a pattern’s cutting instructions, make sure you remove the seam allowance before doubling or tripling the size. For instance, if your pattern calls for 3-1/2″ squares, first you’ll subtract the sum of the seam allowances (1/2″), double the finished block size (from 3″ to 6″), and add the seam allowance back in (1/2″). So, when all is said and done, you will cut a 6-1/2″ piece of fabric.
Resizing Square Blocks:
Square blocks are the easiest to resize. Simply add to your finished block measurement. For example, if you’d like your finished block to be a 4″ square, you’ll need to cut a 4-1/2″ square of fabric.
Resizing Rectangular Blocks:
Similarly to the square, for rectangle blocks, you’ll add to the length and width measurements of your finished block. If you’re doubling block that measures 3″ x 4″ in your quilt, you’ll cut a 6-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ rectangle of fabric.
Resizing Half-Square Triangle Blocks:
When you want to change the size of a Half-Square Triangle block, add 7/8″ to the desired finished block size. To make a 4″ finished block, you’d cut 4-7/8″ squares.
Resizing Quarter Square Triangle:
Since there are two cut lines and two seam lines in a Quarter-Square Triangle block you’ll need to add 1-1/4″ to the desired finished block size. For a finished block that’s 4″, you’d cut your squares 5-1/4″.
